In addition to the extensive programming at both SOMA middle schools, YouthNet engages with our older students at CHS through collaboration creating special events that support their needs for the future. One of YouthNet's missions is to develop ways for CHS students to gain real-world experience and exposure, by participating in our summer mentoring/internship program. Each year, YouthNet places CHS students, predominately Juniors and Seniors, into local businesses, non-profits and government organizations. The program has been in place for the last 8 years, and has been very successful. It is of real interest to our student community and has a solid track record with the businesses that have mentored these students in the past.
All students who participate in this program attend a series of workshops and get training in the following areas: appropriate behavior in the workplace, communication skills primer and role play, interviewing techniques practice, resume building, etc. In addition, a YouthNet board member interviews each student to determine the appropriate placement. The goal is always to facilitate a mutually beneficial experience for both the students and the mentors.
Because the success of the program depends on a solid working relationship between the mentor and student, there is a YouthNet Mentorship Supervisor who acts as a point person for both the businesses and students. They will have regular contact with each mentor and student in order to make sure that everything is running smoothly.

Hours are flexible. They should meet both the mentor and the student schedules. We ask that schedules are kept regular, so that a routine is established.
At this time, no. Students will be gaining experience as interns. It helps build their resume and is good for college applications.
No, interns will be responsible for their own meals.
Yes, it is the role of the mentor to supervise the intern, answer questions, and provide guidance relating to projects, tasks, etc.
It is dependent on the type of business; customer interaction (for service based businesses), administrative tasks, helping with tasks associated with the business, special events, merchandise, drafting press releases, social media, etc.
There is no minimum or maximum timeframe for an internship. The program runs from the end of school in June, July and August. Arrangements with interns are made to accommodate both intern/mentor schedules.
Once you agree to be a mentor, you will be contacted by the program supervisor and be introduced to your intern. You will then arrange a time to meet to confirm that you would like to mentor that student. If both parties agree, start dates and schedules will be set.
Our YouthNet supervisor will be in contact on a weekly basis or you can contact them at any time (by cellphone or email). Our Director, Diane Malloy can be contacted at diane.malloy@somayouthnetorg or internship@somayouthnet.org
